Using a Bluetooth Headset for Netflix & CDs on PS3: Setup Guide

Yes, you can use a Bluetooth headset for Netflix movies and CD audio on the PlayStation 3. The PS3 supports Bluetooth audio output for media playback, though there are some caveats to be aware of.

Pairing Your Headset

  1. Go to Settings → Accessory Settings → Bluetooth Devices.
  2. Put your headset in pairing mode (consult its manual—usually holding the power/multi-function button for 3–5 seconds).
  3. Select "Register New Device" → "Start Scanning."
  4. Choose your headset from the list. Enter passkey if prompted (often "0000" or "1234").

Routing Audio to the Headset

After pairing, the PS3 doesn't always switch audio output automatically. To force it:

  1. Go to Settings → Sound Settings → Audio Output Device.
  2. Select your paired headset.
  3. Set "Output to Headphones" to "All Audio" (not just "Chat Audio").

Important Caveats

  • Compatibility Varies: Not all Bluetooth headsets work well with PS3. Gaming headsets with a USB dongle (like Sony's official models) are more reliable than generic phone headsets.
  • Audio Quality: Bluetooth audio on PS3 uses the A2DP profile, which compresses audio. It won't match wired or USB headset quality.
  • Microphone Support: Mic functionality is inconsistent. It may work for in-game chat but not for Netflix voice search or CD playback controls.
  • CD Playback: Audio CDs play fine through a paired headset, but you lose the ability to use the PS3's visualizations on screen (minor).

For the best experience, use a PS3-certified wireless headset (e.g., Sony Wireless Stereo Headset, Pulse Elite). Generic Bluetooth headsets work but often have latency or mic issues.
