Can You Play Jak and Daxter (PS2) on PS3? Compatibility & Best Alternatives

Short answer: Not from the original PS2 disc on most PS3 models. Only the launch "fat" models (CECHA, CECHB, CECHE, CECHC — 60GB, 20GB, 80GB with hardware/software backward compatibility) can play PS2 discs natively. Every other PS3 (Slim, Super Slim, later fat models) cannot.

Official Ways to Play on PS3

  • PlayStation Store (PSN): The Jak and Daxter Trilogy (remastered Precursor Legacy, Jak II, Jak 3) was sold digitally. Note: It has been delisted in some regions; check your local store.
  • PlayStation Now (Cloud Streaming): The trilogy is included in the PS Now catalog. Requires an active subscription and a stable internet connection. Not available in all regions.

Better Options in 2024+

  • PS4/PS5: Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (PS2 Classics line) — trophy support, 1080p rendering.
  • PC (Steam/Epic): Jak and Daxter Collection (2022) — 4K, 60fps, ultrawide support, mods. The definitive way to play.
  • Original PS2 / PS2 Slim + FreeMCBoot + OPL: Best authentic experience with original hardware, loaded from HDD/USB.

Verdict: If you own a launch fat PS3, your disc works. Otherwise, buy the remaster on PS4/PS5 or the PC collection. They're superior in every way.
