Moving your game saves from one PlayStation 3 to another is straightforward, but the right method depends on what you're transferring and whether you have a PlayStation Plus subscription. Here are the three official ways to do it.
1. USB Flash Drive (FAT32, MBR Partition Scheme)
Best for: Selective saves, no subscription required, free.
- On the source PS3: Go to Settings → System Settings → Backup Utility → Back Up. Choose "Saved Data" only for a faster, smaller backup.
- Alternatively, for individual saves: Game → Saved Data Utility (PS3) → Triangle → Copy → USB Device.
- Plug the USB drive into the target PS3 and reverse the process: Saved Data Utility → Copy from USB.
Caveat: Some saves are copy-protected (e.g., Demon's Souls, Gran Turismo 5) and will not transfer via USB.
2. PlayStation Plus Cloud Storage (Requires Active Subscription)
Best for: Convenience, automatic backups, cross-console sync.
- Source PS3: Settings → System Settings → Online Storage → Upload.
- Target PS3: Same menu → Download.
- Enable auto-upload: Settings → Power Save Settings → Automatic Update → Auto-Upload.
3. Ethernet Cable (Data Transfer Utility)
Best for: Full system migration (users, saves, games, trophies, everything).
- Connect both PS3s directly via Ethernet cable (crossover or standard through a router).
- Source: Settings → System Settings → Data Transfer Utility → "Send".
- Target: Same menu → "Receive".
- Wait. This transfers everything and can take 30 minutes to several hours.
Critical Notes
- Trophies sync separately: Sign in → Trophies → Triangle → Sync.
- PS Plus required for cloud; USB works free.
- Copy-protected saves are blocked on USB/cloud. Data Transfer Utility moves them but wipes the source console.
- Both PS3s should be on the same firmware (4.90+) for smoothest results.
Recommendation: Use Data Transfer Utility for full migration; USB for selective saves; Cloud for convenience if you're already subbed to PS Plus.
