Changing the PS3 Startup Default: Workarounds Since Sony Never Added the Setting

The PlayStation 3 stubbornly boots to the last-played game or disc—or the XMB if no disc is inserted—and there's no built-in setting to change this behavior. Whether you want to launch straight into Netflix, your music library, or a specific app, the console simply doesn't offer a "default startup" option. But that doesn't mean you're stuck pressing extra buttons every time.

Practical Workarounds

1. Pin Favorites for One-Click Access

The XMB's "Favorites" column lets you pin frequently used apps—Netflix, YouTube, Music Player, Browser—so they're always one directional press away. It's not automatic boot, but it's the closest native solution.

2. Remote Play from Phone or PC

Using Sony's Remote Play app (or third-party clients like Chiaki), you can launch any installed app on your PS3 from another device before you even sit down. Great for queuing up a movie while you grab snacks.

3. External USB Hard Drive for Media

Plug in a FAT32-formatted USB drive with video or music files, and the XMB will surface "Video" and "Music" icons automatically. Navigate once, and your media library is ready.

4. Custom Firmware (CFW) + webMAN MOD (Advanced)

For the technically inclined, installing CFW and the webMAN MOD homebrew tool lets you create custom XMB shortcuts and even auto-boot into homebrew apps. Caveats: This voids your warranty, risks a console ban from PSN, and requires comfort with firmware modification.

The Reality

Without CFW, you're always one button press from your preferred media app via Favorites. It's not the elegant "set and forget" setting we'd like, but it's the hand Sony dealt. For most users, organizing the Favorites column is the sweet spot between convenience and safety.
