How to Play The Sims 3 (PC/Mac): Requirements, Stores & Launch Process

The Sims 3 is a desktop game for Windows and macOS. You cannot play it in a browser or "online" without the installed client.

Requirements

  • OS: Windows 7/8/10/11 (64-bit) or macOS (legacy 32-bit client; Catalina 10.15+ requires 64-bit update or Supercomputer workaround).
  • CPU: 2.4 GHz+ Core 2 Duo / equivalent.
  • RAM: 4 GB+ (8 GB recommended with expansions).
  • GPU: 128 MB+ VRAM, Pixel Shader 3.0 (Intel HD 3000+, GeForce 6000+, Radeon HD 2000+).
  • Storage: ~25 GB base; 50+ GB with all EPs/SPs.
  • Disc Drive (for physical) or Internet (for digital download).

Where to Get It

  • EA App (Windows): Digital purchase/download.
  • Steam: The Sims 3 (Legacy Edition) + expansions.
  • Origin (Legacy) / Mac App Store: Older Mac purchases.
  • Physical Discs: Requires EA App/Origin account registration.

Launch Process

  1. Install base game.
  2. Install expansions/stuff packs in release order (recommended).
  3. Launch via EA App / Steam / Desktop shortcut.
  4. Run Launcher first to update, manage mods/CC, select expansion load order.

Note: The Sims 3 Store, Exchange, and some online services are discontinued. Community mods (NRaas, etc.) are essential for stability on modern systems.
