Wii System Update 4.4: Why It Doesn't Exist (Final is 4.3)

There is no Wii System Menu version 4.4. The final official firmware Nintendo released for the Wii is Version 4.3 (June 21, 2010 in NA/EU; 2011 in JP/KR). If you're seeing "4.4," it's a misunderstanding—or a trap.

What 4.3 Actually Did

  • Blocked homebrew exploits (Bannerbomb, HackMii Installer v0.7).
  • Added IOS58 for USB 2.0 support (used by Disney Infinity base).
  • Minor stability improvements.

Why the 4.4 Myth Persists

  • Confusion with 3DS (latest ~11.17.0) or Wii U (latest 5.5.6).
  • Homebrew custom firmware (CFW) version strings—e.g., Priiloader hacks showing "4.4" as a spoof.
  • Misreading "4.3U" / "4.3E" / "4.3J" as "4.3 + region" instead of region codes.

Updating a Wii Today

  1. Connect to internet.
  2. Wii Settings → Wii System Update.
  3. It installs 4.3 (if not already present).

Homebrew User Recommendation

Stay on 4.3. Install Priiloader (brick protection, region-free, update blocker) and the Homebrew Channel. Do not seek "4.4"—it's fake, and often malware bait.
