PS3 Won't Play PS2 Games? — Model & Disc Checks

#1 Reason: Wrong PS3 Model

ModelPS2 Backward Compatibility
CECHA (60 GB), CECHB (20 GB)Hardware (Emotion Engine + GS chip) — ~98%
CECHC (60 GB), CECHE (80 GB)Partial Software (GS emulated) — ~70%
CECHG (40 GB), CECHH/K/L/M/P/Q (all Slim/Super Slim)None — hardware removed

Check model: Back of console, bottom sticker: CECH-xxxx.

#2 Disc Issues

  • Deep scratches / resurfacing damage.
  • Region mismatch (PS2 games region-locked; PS3 honors it).
  • Dual-layer disc (DVD-9) — early lasers struggle (e.g., GTA: SA, MGS3 Subsistence).

#3 System Issues

  • Firmware < 1.60 (early) — update via Settings → System Update.
  • Laser degradation — test with PS3 game / Blu-ray movie.
  • Corrupted dev_flash (custom firmware gone wrong).

Troubleshooting Flow

  1. Confirm BC model (CECHA/B/C/E).
  2. Clean disc (microfiber, center→edge).
  3. Test another PS2 disc.
  4. Update firmware.
  5. Safe Mode → Restore File System / Rebuild Database.
  6. If only dual-layer fails → laser pot tweak (advanced) or replacement.

Non-BC models (Slim/Super Slim) will never play PS2 discs — use PS2 Classics on PSN (few titles) or PCSX2 on PC.
