PS3 "IP Address Timed Out" Error: Fixes

A "timed out" error during IP address acquisition means the PS3 isn't getting a response from your router's DHCP server. Follow these steps:

1. Quick Power Cycle

  1. Turn off PS3, router, and modem.
  2. Unplug all power cords for 60 seconds.
  3. Plug in modem → wait for sync → router → wait for boot → PS3.

2. Verify Physical Layer

  • Ethernet cable: test with another device or swap cable.
  • Router LAN port: try a different port.
  • Link lights: both PS3 and router port LEDs should blink.

3. PS3 Network Settings

Settings → Network Settings → Internet Connection Settings → Custom → Wired Connection →

  • IP Address: Automatic
  • DHCP Host Name: Do Not Set
  • DNS: Automatic (or Manual: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4)
  • MTU: Automatic (or 1472)
  • Proxy Server: Do Not Use

4. Router-Side Checks

  • DHCP pool: Ensure enough addresses available; expand if needed.
  • MAC filtering: Disable or add PS3's MAC address.
  • Firewall / SPI: Temporarily disable to test.
  • Firmware: Update router firmware.

5. Advanced

  • Static IP test: Assign a static IP outside DHCP range on PS3; if it works, router DHCP is the issue.
  • Factory reset PS3: Settings → System Settings → Restore Default Settings (back up saves first!).

6. Escalate

If unresolved, contact your ISP (possible upstream issue) or PlayStation Support with your PS3 model, router model, and error code (e.g., 80710102).
