Fix Borderlands (PS3) Online Connection Issues

Common causes & fixes for Borderlands 1 / 2 / Pre-Sequel on PS3:

Quick Checks

  • PSN Status: status.playstation.com – Green = not PSN.
  • Game Server Status: Check 2K Support or SHiFT for maintenance.
  • Internet Test: PS3 Settings → Network Settings → Internet Connection Test. NAT Type 2 ideal; Type 3 = strict (port forward needed).

Fixes

  1. Restart Network Gear: Power cycle modem/router (30 sec).
  2. Wired Connection: Ethernet eliminates Wi-Fi instability.
  3. Port Forwarding (UPnP alternative): Forward to PS3 IP:
    • TCP: 80, 443, 5223, 10070–10080
    • UDP: 3478, 3479, 3658, 10070
  4. DMZ Host: Set PS3 as DMZ in router (exposes all ports; less secure).
  5. DNS Change: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare) in PS3 Network Settings.
  6. Delete Game Data Utility: Game → Triangle → Delete (not save data). Reinstall patches.
  7. Reinstall Game: Delete Game Data + Save backup → Reinstall from disc → Update.
  8. PS3 System Update: Settings → System Update (latest 4.90+).

Borderlands 1 Specific

  • Gamespy shutdown (2014) killed matchmaking. Use **LAN/VPN (Hamachi, Radmin VPN)** for co-op.
  • Community patches (Borderlands Unofficial Community Patch) restore some functionality on PC only.

If all fail: Contact 2K Support with error code (e.g., CONNECTION_LOST, TIMEOUT).
