PlayStation Powers On But No Picture: Troubleshooting Guide

Power light on, but no video signal. This affects PS3, PS4, PS5 similarly. Follow these steps in order.

1. Basic Checks (Do First)

  • HDMI Cable: Reseat both ends. Try a known-good HDMI 2.0/2.1 cable (short, certified)
  • TV Input: Cycle to correct HDMI port (HDMI 1, 2, 3…). Label matches
  • Power Cycle: Turn off console → unplug power cord → wait 60 sec → replug → turn on
  • TV Power Cycle: Same for TV

2. Resolution / Handshake Issues

  • Safe Mode (PS4/PS5): Hold power button 7 sec (2 beeps) → boots in 480p. Settings → Screen & Video → Video Output → set Resolution to 1080p / 2160p manually
  • Safe Mode (PS3): Hold power until 2 beeps → "Video Output Settings" → auto-detect or manual
  • Disable HDR / Deep Color: Some TVs handshake fails with HDR on. Turn off in console video settings
  • HDCP: Toggle HDCP off (Settings → System → HDCP) – helps with capture cards / some AVRs

3. Port & Hardware Faults

  • Try Different HDMI Port on TV
  • Bypass AVR/Soundbar: Connect console directly to TV
  • Test Console on Another TV/Monitor. If works → your TV/port/cable issue
  • Test Another Device on Same TV Port. If works → console/HDMI port issue

4. Console-Specific Fixes

PS5

  • White light pulsing? = Rest mode / error. Hold power 15 sec → full shutdown
  • HDMI port fragile. Inspect for bent pins

PS4 / PS4 Pro

  • "Blue Light of Death" (blinking blue) = hardware failure (APU solder). Needs reball/replace
  • White light solid but no video = HDMI port or retimer chip

PS3

  • Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) = RSX/Cell solder failure. Video often dies first
  • Try composite (AV) cable – if composite works, HDMI port/encoder dead

5. Audio Check

If you hear startup sound / menu sounds but no picture → video path fault (HDMI encoder, retimer, APU). If no audio either → broader failure (APU, power rail, HDMI PHY).

When to Seek Repair

  • All cables/TVs/ports tested, safe mode fails
  • Visual artifacts before death (green sparkles, flicker, color shift)
  • Console was dropped, liquid spilled, overheated

Contact PlayStation Support (warranty) or reputable microsoldering repair shop (iFixit, local). Cost: $80–$180 for HDMI port; $150–$300 for APU reball.
