Who Founded PlayStation? Key Figures Behind the Brand

PlayStation was created by Sony Corporation, but three individuals were instrumental:

• Ken Kutaragi ("Father of PlayStation"): Engineer who championed the project, led hardware development, and headed Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE).
• Norio Ohga (Sony Chairman/CEO): Approved the project after Nintendo cancelled their SNES CD-ROM partnership with Sony. His support was crucial.
• Toshihiko Hirai (SCE President): Managed the business side, software licensing, and global launch strategy.

Background: The original PlayStation began as a joint venture with Nintendo for a SNES CD-ROM add-on. When Nintendo broke the agreement, Ohga authorized Kutaragi to develop a standalone Sony console. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) was established in November 1993 to develop and market it. The PlayStation launched in Japan on December 3, 1994.
