Connecting PS2 to a TV Without AV/S-Video (Using HDMI Converter)

You cannot connect a PS2 directly to a DISH Network box—it's a satellite receiver, not a video switch. And if your TV lacks composite (yellow/red/white) or S-Video, you need an active converter.

Solution: PS2 → HDMI Converter (Upscaler)

  1. Buy a PS2-to-HDMI converter ($15–$30). Key features:
    • Input: PS2 AV Multi-out (composite + component support).
    • Output: HDMI 720p/1080p upscaled.
    • Power: USB micro-B (plug into PS2 front USB or wall wart).
    • Audio: HDMI embedded + 3.5 mm jack.
  2. Connect: PS2 AV cable → Converter → HDMI cable → TV HDMI port.
  3. PS2 Settings: System Configuration → Component Video Out → Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr (even if using composite cable, the converter reads Y). Set Screen Size: Full / 16:9.
  4. TV: Select correct HDMI input. Enable "Game Mode" for low latency.

Better Quality: Component Cables + Converter

  • Official Sony / Monster / HD Retrovision component cables (YPbPr) → Converter → 480p/1080i native progressive → sharper than composite upscale.
  • PS2 must be set to "Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr" + "Progressive Scan" (hold △+✕ on boot for games supporting it).

Alternative: RetroTINK 2X / 4K / OSSC

High-end line-doublers/scalers ($100–$300) — zero lag, superior deinterlacing, scanlines. Overkill for casual play.

What Doesn't Work

  • Passive RCA-to-HDMI cables (no scaler) — TV won't sync 240p/480i over HDMI.
  • RF modulator → TV coax — image terrible, audio mono.
  • DISH box as passthrough — no video input.
