The original PlayStation (SCPH-1000 / SCPH-3000 series) launched at different prices by region:
| Region | Launch Date | Launch Price | Approx. 2024 USD Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | December 3, 1994 | ¥39,800 | ~$350–$400 |
| North America | September 9, 1995 | $299 | ~$600 |
| Europe | September 29, 1995 | £299 / DM 599 / FRF 1,990 | ~€550–€650 / $600–$700 |
The aggressive $299 US price (announced at E3 1995 with the famous "299" reveal) undercut the Sega Saturn ($399) and was a major factor in PlayStation's early dominance.
