How to Download Games from the PlayStation Store

A step-by-step guide for PS5, PS4, and Web/Browser.

On PS5 / PS4 Console

  1. Connect to internet (Settings → Network).
  2. Sign in to your PSN account.
  3. Open PlayStation Store (shopping bag icon on home screen).
  4. Browse or Search for the game.
  5. Select game → Add to Cart (or "Buy" for free).
  6. Go to Cart (top right) → Proceed to Checkout.
  7. Select payment: Wallet funds, Credit/Debit, PayPal, Gift Card.
  8. Confirm Purchase.
  9. Download starts automatically. Track in Notifications (PS5) / Downloads (PS4).

Via Web Browser (Remote Download)

  1. Go to store.playstation.com and sign in.
  2. Find game → Add to Cart → Checkout.
  3. After purchase, select "Download to Your PS5/PS4" (console must be in Rest Mode or On, with "Stay Connected to Internet" enabled in Power Save settings).

Key Requirements & Tips

  • Storage Space: Check Settings → Storage. Delete unused games if needed (PS5: M.2 SSD expansion supported).
  • PS Plus: Required for online multiplayer in most paid games. Not required for free-to-play (Fortnite, Apex, Warzone) or single-player downloads.
  • Pre-orders: Auto-download ~48h before launch (enable "Automatic Downloads" in Settings).
  • Remote Play: You can start downloads via PlayStation App (iOS/Android) → Game Library → Purchased → Download to Console.

Troubleshooting

  • Stuck at "Preparing"/"Queued": Pause/Resume, Rebuild Database (Safe Mode), or Restore Licenses (Settings → Users → Other).
  • Slow Speed: Use wired Ethernet, pause other network traffic, download late night/early morning.
  • Error Codes (CE-/NP-/WS-): Search PlayStation Error Code Lookup.
