The PS2's DVD laser assembly is the number one failure point. Symptoms include "Disc Read Error" messages, loud clicking or grinding noises, long load times, or the disc spinning without data being read.
| Level | Issue | Fix | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dirty Laser Lens | DVD lens cleaner disc (brush type) or 99% IPA + foam swab on lens | Easy |
| 2 | Misaligned Laser (Potentiometer) | Adjust DVD pot (CD/DVD separate) — tiny turns, test after each | Moderate (needs multimeter/guide) |
| 3 | Worn Laser Diode | Replace laser assembly (KHS-400A/B/C/R depending on model) | Moderate-Hard (ribbon cables, alignment) |
| 4 | Spindle Motor / Sled Motor | Disc won't spin / laser won't move — replace drive mech or full drive | Hard |
| 5 | Motherboard (LA6508 / BA5815FM chips) | Both CDs & DVDs fail — board-level repair | Pro only |
If a pot tweak fails, a new laser ($15–25) often fixes a Fat model; Slims may need a full drive ($30–50). Compare that to the console's value ($40–80). Always discharge static, track screws, and photograph ribbon cable orientations before disassembly.
