PSP Outer Shell: Materials and Manufacturing Process Explained
The PlayStation Portable's outer shell is primarily made of polycarbonate plastic — chosen for durability, light weight, and moldability into complex shapes.
Manufacturing Process
Design & Mold Creation: 3D models are used to precision-machine steel/aluminum molds.
Plastic Injection Molding: Molten polycarbonate is injected into molds under high pressure, then cooled to solidify.
Demolding & Trimming: Shells are ejected; excess plastic (flash) is trimmed.
Finishing: Sanding, buffing, painting, and texturing for final appearance.
Assembly: Shells are integrated with screen, buttons, motherboard, and other internals.
Additional Notes
Different PSP models (1000, 2000, 3000, Go) may use slight material/process variations.
Polycarbonate allows diverse colors and limited-edition designs.
Shell is robust but prone to scratches and cracks from drops.
