The original PlayStation made its debut in December 1994 in Japan, marking Sony's bold entry into the console market. The system then arrived in North America and Europe in September 1995, where it quickly challenged the Sega Saturn and later the Nintendo 64. Its CD-ROM format, 3D graphics capabilities, and strong third-party support helped it become the first console to ship over 100 million units worldwide.
