How to Get a PS Vita in 2024: Used Market, Alternatives

Sony discontinued PS Vita in 2019. You cannot buy new. Winning one is near-impossible (no active contests). Here's how to actually acquire one.

Buying Used (Only Real Option)

Where to Buy

  • eBay: Largest selection. Filter "Sold" for real prices. Buy from sellers with 99%+ feedback, photos of actual unit.
  • Mercari / Facebook Marketplace / OfferUp: Local pickup avoids shipping damage.
  • Retro Game Stores: Often tested, warrantied (30–90 days). Higher price.
  • Japan Imports (eBay / Yahoo Auctions via proxy): Often better condition, cheaper. Region-free for games (DLC/PSN account must match game region).

Must-Check Before Buying

  • Screen: OLED burn-in (static HUD ghosts), LCD yellowing/backlight bleed.
  • Analog Sticks: Rubber peeling, drift. Replacements available ($10).
  • Rear Touchpad: Test sensitivity (Settings → Devices).
  • Memory Card: Proprietary (4/8/16/32/64 GB). Expensive ($1/GB). Ensure included or budget $40–$80.
  • Firmware: 3.60 / 3.65 / 3.68 / 3.70–3.74 all hackable (HENkaku/Ensō). 3.73+ require modoru downgrade.

Alternatives

  • Steam Deck OLED / LCD: Plays Vita ports (Persona 4 Golden, Gravity Rush, Ys VIII), PSP, PS1, PS2, Switch, PC. $399+.
  • PS Portal / Remote Play: Stream PS5 to handheld. Not standalone.
  • Vita Emulation (Vita3K): Early progress. Few commercial games boot. Not viable yet.
  • PSP / PPSSPP: Many Vita games are enhanced PSP ports (Persona 3 Portable, Danganronpa, Trails series).

Verdict: Buy a Slim (2000) + 64 GB memory card + HENkaku/Ensō for best value. OLED only if you prioritize screen quality and accept burn-in risk.
