How PS Vita Connects to PlayStation (PS4/PS5): Complete Breakdown

The PS Vita integrates with PlayStation consoles in four ways—each with caveats.

1. Remote Play (Stream Console → Vita)

  • PS4: Native support. 540p/30fps (Vita screen), 1080p/60fps on PSTV. Requires same LAN or internet (UPnP/port forward).
  • PS5: Not supported. Sony removed Vita Remote Play on PS5.
  • Limitations: L2/R2/L3/R3 mapped to rear touchpad (awkward); latency ~60–100 ms local; some games block Remote Play (e.g., Gran Turismo 7).

2. Cross-Play (Vita + PS4/PS5 Same Match)

  • Supported titles: Helldivers, WipEout 2048, MotorStorm RC, PlayStation All-Stars, Sound Shapes, Dragon's Crown (PS3/Vita/PS4).
  • List is static—no new cross-play games added since 2017.

3. Cross-Save (Shared Progression)

  • Cloud save sync via PS Plus. Works for: Persona 4 Golden (PS4/Vita/PC), Hotline Miami, Rogue Legacy, Spelunky, Terraria, Minecraft (legacy).
  • Check each game's store page for "Cross-Save" badge.

4. PlayStation Plus (Unified Subscription)

  • One PS Plus sub covers online multiplayer, monthly games, cloud saves on Vita, PS3, PS4, PS5.
  • Vita monthly games ended March 2019; library remains downloadable if claimed.

What Doesn't Work

  • PS VR: Vita cannot display or process VR.
  • PlayStation Now: Service merged into PS Plus Premium; Vita app removed 2021.
  • PS5 Game Streaming: Not supported.

Verdict

Vita + PS4 is a fantastic portable companion if you own cross-buy/cross-save titles. For PS5, Vita is effectively a legacy device—consider PS Portal or Remote Play on phone/PC instead.
