Recycle or Reuse Your Original PlayStation (PS1)

The PlayStation 1 (1994) is e-waste if trashed, but a treasure if reused. Here's how to handle it responsibly:

Reuse (Best Option)

  • Play It: CRT + RGB SCART / Component (via early models SCPH-100x/500x/700x) = authentic 240p/480i. ODE (PSIO, XStation) loads ISOs from SD — laser-free.
  • Gift/Donate: Friends, family, local retro gaming group, library, community center.
  • Sell: eBay, Etsy, Mercari, local retro shop. Working console + cables + controller = $40–$100+. Rare models (SCPH-1001 "Audiophile", Net Yaroze) = hundreds.
  • Repurpose: Raspberry Pi 4 inside shell (RetroPie) — plays PS1 + N64 + Dreamcast + more. Keeps aesthetic.

Recycle (If Broken Beyond Repair)

  • Municipal E-Waste Drop-Off: City/county hazardous waste events, permanent facilities. Free.
  • Best Buy / Staples / Goodwill (Dell Reconnect): Accept consoles, cables, controllers. Free.
  • Call2Recycle: For batteries (PS1 controller backup battery CR2032, memory card battery).
  • Specialized E-Waste Recyclers: Certified R2/e-Stewards. Ensure data destruction (memory cards).

Prep Before Letting Go

  1. Remove Memory Cards (save data).
  2. Remove Disc.
  3. Wipe external surfaces.
  4. Bundle cables/controllers.

Never put electronics in curbside trash/recycling. Heavy metals (lead solder, mercury in CCFL screens if portable) leach into soil/water. Reuse extends life; recycle recovers materials.
