Who Created the PlayStation? Sony & The Nintendo Betrayal

The PlayStation was created by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), a division of Sony, led by Ken Kutaragi ("Father of PlayStation"). But the origin story involves a dramatic partnership collapse with Nintendo.

The Nintendo-Sony CD-ROM Deal (1988–1991)

  • Sony developed the Super Disc CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo (SNES).
  • Contract gave Sony full rights to CD-ROM software licensing & royalties — unusually favorable.
  • Nintendo (Hiroshi Yamauchi) realized the terms threatened their cartridge monopoly. Secretly negotiated with Philips for a rival CD-i add-on.

The 1991 CES Betrayal

  • Sony announced "Play Station" (SNES + CD-ROM) at CES June 1991.
  • Next day: Nintendo announced partnership with Philips — blindsiding Sony.
  • Sony considered abandoning gaming. Kutaragi convinced Sony CEO Norio Ohga to go solo.

PlayStation Launch (1994)

  • Sony built its own 32-bit console: PlayStation (PSX).
  • Developer-friendly (C libraries, PC-based devkits), CD-ROM (cheap, 650MB), 3D focus.
  • Launched Dec 1994 (Japan), Sep 1995 (US/EU). 102M units sold.

Legacy

Nintendo's betrayal created their greatest competitor. The "Nintendo Play Station" prototype (1 of 200) sold for $360,000 in 2020. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) now dominates console gaming.
