Cartridge vs. Disc Video Games: Technical Differences (Speed, Capacity, Cost, Design Impact)

The core difference is the **storage medium**: solid-state ROM cartridge vs. optical disc. This cascades into performance, capacity, cost, and design.

Cartridge (ROM Cart)

  • Medium: Mask ROM / Flash ROM on PCB inside plastic shell. Edge connector (pins).
  • Access: **Random, byte-addressable** — CPU reads directly via address bus. **Zero seek time.**
  • Speed: ~1–5 MB/s (SNES), up to 20+ MB/s (N64). Fast enough for streaming assets.
  • Durability: No moving parts, resistant to shock, scratch, heat. Contacts corrode (clean with IPA).
  • Capacity: Limited by cost. NES: 128 KB–1 MB. SNES: 2–6 MB. N64: 4–64 MB. GBA: 4–32 MB. DS: 8–512 MB.
  • Save Data: On-cart SRAM/EEPROM/Flash (battery or battery-less).
  • Cost/Unit: High ($5–20+ per cart). Limits print runs.
  • Piracy Resistance: Harder to copy (need EPROM programmer, custom PCB).
  • Examples: NES, SNES, N64, GB/GBC/GBA, DS/3DS, Genesis, Atari 2600, TurboGrafx HuCard.

Optical Disc (CD / DVD / BD / GD-ROM / UMD)

  • Medium: Pits/lands on polycarbonate + reflective layer. Read by laser.
  • Access: **Sequential / sector-based** — seek time (50–200 ms), constant linear velocity (CLV) or constant angular (CAV).
  • Speed: CD 150 KB/s (1×) → DVD 1.3 MB/s (1×) → BD 4.5 MB/s (1×). Consoles use 24×–48× DVD / 2×–8× BD.
  • Durability: Scratches, fingerprints, rot, warping, laser rot. Data side vulnerable.
  • Capacity: CD 650/700 MB, DVD 4.7/8.5 GB, BD 25/50/100 GB, GD-ROM 1.2 GB, UMD 1.8 GB.
  • Save Data: Separate memory card / HDD / internal flash.
  • Cost/Unit: Low (<$1 for DVD/BD). Enables massive print runs, low retail price.
  • Piracy: Easier to replicate (pressed discs) or burn (CD-R/DVD-R).
  • Examples: PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4/PS5, Xbox/X360/One/Series, Sega CD/Saturn/Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii/Wii U, PC.

Impact on Game Design

AspectCartridgeDisc
Loading ScreensNear-zero (stream from ROM)Prominent (seek + transfer)
World DesignSmall, dense, streaming limitedLarge, open, pre-load sections
AudioSampled (limited), sequenced (MIDI-like)Streamed CD-DA / ADPCM / MP3 / ATRAC — full OST
VideoNone / tinyFMV cutscenes (MDEC, Bink, etc.)
PatchabilityNone (mask ROM) / Limited (Flash)Day-1 patches, DLC, updates (on HDD)

Modern Context

  • Switch Game Cards: Mask ROM (read-only) + small save partition. 1–64 GB. Best of both: fast, durable, high capacity.
  • Discs Fading: PS5 Digital / Xbox Series S / PC — all digital. Cartridges remain only on Switch.

Summary: Cartridges = speed, durability, low capacity, high cost. Discs = high capacity, low cost, slower access, fragile. Design adapted to medium.
