Which Consoles Come with Motion Controllers? Complete List (1989-2024)

Motion control has evolved from gimmick to core pillar. Here's every console that included or officially supported motion controllers, categorized by integration level.

Consoles Built Around Motion Control (Core Feature)

  • Nintendo Wii (2006): Wii Remote + Nunchuk standard in every box. Defined the era. 100M+ sold.
  • Nintendo Wii U (2012): Wii U GamePad (motion, touchscreen, gyro, NFC) + Wii Remote backward compatibility. Motion mandatory for many games.
  • Nintendo Switch (2017): Joy-Con (detachable, 6-axis IMU, HD Rumble, IR camera) + Pro Controller (gyro only). Motion baked into hardware DNA—used in Zelda: BotW/TotK, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon, Ring Fit.

Consoles with Add-On Motion Systems (Optional Peripherals)

  • PlayStation 3 + PlayStation Move (2010): Wand + PlayStation Eye camera. Optional. ~50 supported games (Sports Champions, Killzone 3, RE5/6, Heavy Rain).
  • PlayStation 4 + PlayStation VR (2016): PS Move wands or DualShock 4 light-bar tracking for VR. Move optional for non-VR games.
  • Xbox 360 + Kinect (2010): Camera-based full-body tracking. No handheld controller. Voice control. ~130 supported games.
  • Xbox One + Kinect (2013, Discontinued 2017): Improved depth camera, IR, voice. Bundled at launch, later unbundled. Discontinued.

VR Headsets with Motion Controllers (Not Consoles, But Relevant)

  • Meta Quest 2 / 3 / Pro (2020+): Touch controllers with 6DOF inside-out tracking. Standalone.
  • PlayStation VR2 (2023): Sense controllers: haptics, adaptive triggers, finger detection. PS5 only.
  • Valve Index (2019): Knuckles controllers (finger tracking). PC VR.
  • HTC Vive / Cosmos / Focus: Wand / controller variants.

Historical Footnotes (The Precursors)

  • Sega Activator (1993, Genesis): Floor-mounted infrared octagon. Body movement = inputs. Unreliable, $180, rare.
  • Nintendo Power Glove (1989, NES): Mattel glove, ultrasonic sensors. Barely functional. Cult icon.
  • Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak (1997): Force feedback, not motion. But started "controller feedback" era.
  • Sony Dual Analog / DualShock (1997/1998): Analog sticks + rumble. Foundation for Sixaxis (PS3 motion) → DualShock 4 → DualSense.

Key Distinction

Nintendo remains the only manufacturer with motion controls as a core, mandatory feature across three consecutive generations. Sony and Microsoft treated them as optional accessories or VR adjuncts. The Switch's Joy-Con makes motion ubiquitous—every Switch owner has it.
