Buying a Super Nintendo (SNES) in 2024: Options, Prices & Alternatives

Nintendo discontinued the SNES in 1999 (NA) / 2003 (Japan). Brand-new units are virtually nonexistent outside of rare warehouse finds ($500+). Here are your practical options:

1. Used Original Hardware

  • Price: $60–$120 (console only), $150–$300+ (CIB with box/manual).
  • Models:
    • SHVC-001 (Original): Better RGB output, heavier, prone to yellowing.
    • SNS-101 (1-Chip / "Mini"): Sharper video, lighter, less yellowing, no RGB without mod. Preferred for modern displays.
  • Where: eBay, Facebook Marketplace, local retro shops, conventions.
  • Watch For: Capacitor leakage (audio/video noise), yellowed shells (reversible with Retrobrite), worn cartridge slots.

2. Professionally Refurbished

  • Vendors: Retro Revival, Console Passion, DKOldies, eStarland (US); Retro Game Base, Console Clinic (UK/EU).
  • Includes: Recapped, deep cleaned, new 72-pin connector (NES) / cartridge slot clean, shell retro-brighted, 90-day–1yr warranty.
  • Price: $180–$300+.

3. FPGA / Hardware Clones (Best Authentic Experience)

DevicePriceKey Features
Analogue Super Nt$199FPGA, 1080p HDMI, zero lag, cartridge slot, original controller ports, jailbreak for ROMs
MiSTer FPGA (SNES Core)$250–$400 (DIY)Multi-system, best accuracy, HDMI, analog out, run-ahead, save states
RetroN 5 / RetroFreak$100–$150Android-based emulation, cartridge slot, HDMI, save states, cheat support

4. Software Emulation (Free / Low Cost)

  • PC/macOS/Linux: bsnes/higan (accuracy), Snes9x (performance), Mesen-S (balanced).
  • Mobile: RetroArch (bsnes/snes9x cores), Snes9x EX+ (Android).
  • Legal Note: Emulation is legal. Downloading ROMs you don't own is not. Dump your own carts with a Retrode or INL Retro Dumper.

5. Modern Official Re-releases

  • Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: Curated SNES library (≈50 titles) with save states, rewind, online play. $49.99/yr.
  • Super NES Classic Edition: Discontinued (2017), 21 built-in games, HDMI. Used: $150–$250.

Recommendation by Use Case

  • Purist / CRT Owner: Refurbished 1-Chip (SNS-101) + RGB SCART → PVM/BVM.
  • Modern TV, Original Carts: Analogue Super Nt (best plug-and-play).
  • Tinkerer / Multi-System: MiSTer FPGA.
  • Budget / Convenience: Switch Online + 8BitDo SNES Pro controller.
  • Collector: CIB original console + flashcart (FXPAK Pro / SD2SNES) for backups.
