Connecting Nintendo 64 to Modern Flat-Screen TVs

The N64 outputs analog signals (Composite/RCA or S-Video) at 240p/480i. Modern TVs lack these inputs or handle them poorly. You need a converter.

Connection Options (Best to Worst)

  1. HDMI Mod (Internal): UltraHDMI, N64Digital, RetroGem – soldered in, true digital HDMI, best quality, lag-free. Professional install recommended.
  2. External HDMI Converters:
    • EON Super 64 / GCHD Mk-II: Plug into AV port, excellent quality, zero lag.
    • RetroTINK 2X/4K/5X: High-end line doublers/scalers for composite/S-Video → HDMI.
    • Cheap Composite→HDMI Adapters ($15–30): Work but often add lag, poor deinterlacing, washed colors.
  3. S-Video → HDMI: Better than composite if your TV/converter supports it.
  4. CRT TV: Zero lag, authentic look—best for purists.

Important Notes

  • Converters cannot increase native resolution (320×240). Image will be pixelated on large screens.
  • Audio: Most converters pass stereo RCA → HDMI. For external audio, use RCA splitters.
  • Aspect Ratio: N64 is 4:3. Set TV to "Just Scan" or 4:3 mode to avoid stretching.

Alternatives

  • Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: Legal N64 library with save states, online play.
  • Emulation (Project64, Mupen64Plus, simple64): Higher resolution, widescreen hacks, texture packs.
