Taking Video Games on a Plane: TSA Rules & Best Practices

Yes, you can bring video games on planes. Guidelines:

Carry-On (Recommended)

  • Handhelds: Switch, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Vita, 3DS — keep in bag, remove for screening if asked.
  • Consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One): Allowed in carry-on. Remove for X-ray (like laptop). TSA may swab.
  • Games/Cartridges/Discs: Unlimited quantity. Keep in case/protective sleeve.
  • Accessories: Controllers, cables, headsets, charging docks — all allowed.

Checked Luggage (Riskier)

  • Consoles allowed but: baggage handling risk (impact, theft), temperature extremes, lithium battery rules (internal batteries OK, spares in carry-on only).
  • If checking: Hard case, bubble wrap, remove discs, carry-on controllers.

Mobile Gaming

  • Phone/tablet: Airplane mode required (disable cellular). Wi-Fi/Bluetooth allowed above 10,000 ft (airline dependent).
  • Downloaded games work offline. Streaming (Xbox Cloud, GeForce Now) needs Wi-Fi — check airline availability.

International

  • Region locks: Physical games region-free (Switch, PS4/5, Xbox). DLC region-locked to account store.
  • Power: USB-C chargers universal. Dock/brick may need adapter (check voltage 100-240V).
