Are Video Games Smarter Than Computers?

No. Video games are software—sets of instructions—running on computer hardware. The "intelligence" in games (enemy AI, procedural generation, physics) comes from algorithms written by programmers. The computer simply executes those instructions at high speed.

Why Game AI Seems Smart

  • Specialized Algorithms: Finite State Machines, Behavior Trees, GOAP, Utility AI, or Machine Learning agents designed for specific, constrained game rules.
  • Perfect Information: Game AI often accesses the full game state (player position, health, inventory) instantly, unlike real-world AI dealing with noisy sensors.
  • Controlled Environment: The game world is deterministic and fully known to the developers, allowing highly optimized, "cheating" AI (e.g., rubber-banding in racers, aimbot-perfect tracking in shooters) that creates challenge without true generality.

In essence: Games are clever applications of computing power to simulate intelligence within narrow, authored scenarios. They do not possess general intelligence, consciousness, or understanding.
