How to Format Video Game Titles in Writing

No universal rule—follow your style guide (AP, Chicago, MLA, APA, house style). Common conventions:

Style GuideVideo Game Title FormatExample
AP (Journalism)Quotation marks"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild"
Chicago / MLA / APAItalicsThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Wikipedia / Game Journalism (Common)ItalicsThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
All Caps (Legacy/Marketing)All capsTHE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD

Best Practices

  • Consistency: Pick one style per document.
  • Series vs. Entry: Series in roman (Final Fantasy series), entry in italics (Final Fantasy VII).
  • DLC/Expansions: Italics if standalone (Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree), quotes if patch/DLC (Elden Ring "Shadow of the Erdtree" patch).
  • Platform Suffixes: Omit unless disambiguating (Resident Evil 4 (2023) vs Resident Evil 4 (2005)).

When in doubt: Italicize. It's the standard for standalone creative works in most modern publishing.
