First Video Game Console Ever: Magnavox Odyssey (1972)

Magnavox Odyssey — released September 1972 (US) — is the world's first home video game console.

Key Facts

  • Designer: Ralph Baer ("Father of Video Games") + team at Sanders Associates.
  • Tech: Discrete transistor logic (no CPU), analog circuitry, plastic screen overlays for color/backgrounds.
  • Games: 12 built-in (Table Tennis, Ski, Simon Says, etc.) — no cartridges.
  • Controllers: Two wired boxes with three knobs each (horizontal, vertical, "English").
  • Sales: ~350,000 units — modest but proved the market.

Predecessor (Not a Console)

"Tennis for Two" (1958, William Higinbotham, Brookhaven Lab) — oscilloscope demo, not commercial.

Odyssey launched the industry; Atari's Pong (1975 home) popularized it.
