Why Were Video Games Invented?

Video games emerged from multiple converging motivations, not a single "invention moment":

1. Research & Demonstration (1950s–60s)

  • Tennis for Two (1958) – William Higinbotham, Brookhaven Lab: showcased analog computer capability to visitors.
  • Spacewar! (1962) – MIT students on PDP-1: stressed hardware, explored real-time interactive graphics.
  • Military simulation: Early wargames trained officers in logistics and strategy.

2. Commercial Entertainment (1970s)

  • Computer Space (1971) / Pong (1972) – Nolan Bushnell/Nutting Associates & Atari: proved coin-op viability.
  • Arcade boom: Low barrier to entry, social competition, novel tech spectacle.

3. Home Accessibility (Late 1970s–80s)

  • Atari VCS (1977), NES (1985): Brought arcade experience home, enabled longer narratives, save systems, diverse genres.

4. Evolving Drivers

  • Technological push: Each generation chases better graphics, physics, AI, online connectivity.
  • Creative expression: Games as interactive art, storytelling, social spaces.
  • Economic engine: $180B+ industry drives R&D that spills into GPUs, VR, networking, AI.

In short: curiosity → spectacle → accessibility → culture & economy.
