How to Start Making Video Games at Home: Complete Beginner Roadmap

1. Pick an Engine (Free & Powerful)

  • Godot 4: Open-source, lightweight, GDScript (Python-like), great for 2D/3D.
  • Unity: Industry standard, C#, massive Asset Store, best for mobile/3D.
  • Unreal Engine 5: Visual scripting (Blueprints), high-fidelity 3D, steeper learning curve.
  • GameMaker: Drag-and-drop + GML, ideal for 2D pixel art games.

2. Learn Core Skills (Free Resources)

  • Programming: freeCodeCamp, Codecademy, Harvard CS50 (YouTube).
  • Game Design: Game Maker's Toolkit, GDC Vault, "Level Up!" by Scott Rogers.
  • Art/Audio: Blender (3D), Aseprite/Krita (2D), Audacity/BeepBox (audio).

3. Build Micro-Projects (1–2 Weeks Each)

  1. Pong clone (input, collision, win state)
  2. Endless runner (spawning, scrolling, score)
  3. Top-down shooter (enemy AI, waves, upgrades)
  4. Dialogue system (data-driven, branching)

4. Join Communities

  • Reddit: r/gamedev, r/Unity3D, r/godot
  • Discord: Engine-specific servers, Game Dev League
  • Game Jams: Ludum Dare, GMTK Jam, Brackeys Jam (itch.io)

5. Publish & Iterate

Release free on itch.io → gather feedback → polish → consider Steam Direct ($100 fee).

Start this weekend. Download Godot, follow a "Your First Game" tutorial. Momentum beats perfection.
