Pinpointing an exact number is difficult due to spin-offs, mobile titles, and regional releases, but the core lineage is well-documented.
Mainline NHL Series (EA Sports)
As of NHL 25 (2024), there are 34 mainline entries starting with NHL Hockey (1991) on Sega Genesis. The series has released annually with few gaps.
Spin-Offs & Alternate Series
- NHL Hitz (Midway/EA): 3 titles (2000–2003) — arcade style.
- NHL Slapshot (EA): 1 title (2010) — Wii exclusive with mini-stick peripheral.
- NHL 2K Series (Visual Concepts/2K Sports): 11 titles (1999–2011) — primary competitor to EA.
- Gretzky NHL / ESPN NHL Hockey: ~6 titles (1990s–2004).
- Arcade/Classic: Blades of Steel, Ice Hockey (NES), NHL 94 (often counted separately from main numbering).
Mobile, Handheld & Digital-Only
- Mobile: NHL SuperCard, NHL Figures, and various licensed manager apps.
- Handheld: Distinct versions for Game Boy, GBA, DS, PSP, Vita (often condensed ports).
- Legacy Ports: Recent "Legacy Editions" on Switch/PS4/Xbox One are roster updates of prior engines.
Total Estimate
Conservatively, there are 60+ distinct NHL-licensed video game releases across all platforms. If counting every platform-specific SKU (e.g., NHL 09 on PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, PSP, iOS as separate), the number exceeds 200+.
Tip: For collecting, search by specific platform (e.g., "NHL games PlayStation 2") or sub-series (NHL 2K, NHL Hitz).
