There Is No "Worst" Video Game Company — Only Practices to Critique

Labeling a single company "worst" is subjective and unproductive. Companies change, contexts differ, and players prioritize different things. Instead, evaluate specific practices:

Practices That Earn Criticism

  • Predatory Monetization: Loot boxes (gambling), pay-to-win, aggressive battle passes, $70 base + $30 battle pass + $20 skins (e.g., Diablo Immortal, FIFA/FC Ultimate Team).
  • Crunch & Labor Abuse: Mandatory 80-hr weeks, layoffs after record profits (Activision Blizzard, Epic, Ubisoft, Rockstar documented).
  • Launch Disasters: Cyberpunk 2077 (console), Battlefield 2042, Redfall, Gollum — sold broken, patched later (or not).
  • Anti-Consumer DRM / Always-Online: SimCity (2013), Diablo III launch, Ubisoft Uplay history, Denuvo on single-player.
  • Studio Closures After Success: Tango Gameworks (Hi-Fi Rush), Arkane Austin (Redfall), Volition (Saints Row) — closed despite critical acclaim.
  • IP Hoarding / Neglect: F-Zero, Mother 3, Half-Life (Valve), Timesplitters — dormant for decades.
  • Misleading Marketing: No Man's Sky launch (fixed later), Aliens: Colonial Marines demo vs. retail, The Day Before (scam).

Nuance Matters

  • Same company: CD Projekt — Witcher 3 (pro-consumer) → Cyberpunk launch (anti-consumer) → Redemption arc.
  • Same company: Ubisoft — Rayman Legends (masterpiece) → The Crew (servers killed, game unplayable).
  • Indie devs also crunch, overpromise, abandon.

How to Judge

  1. Track patterns over years, not one game.
  2. Separate dev studio from publisher (e.g., Arkane ≠ Bethesda ≠ Microsoft).
  3. Vote with wallet + voice: refund, review, unionize, regulate.

Better Question: "Which companies currently have the worst track record on X practice?" — then cite evidence.
