Ideal Storage Temperature for Video Games & Consoles

Video games (cartridges, discs, consoles) are electronic media—treat them like electronics, not food.

Safe Ranges

Media TypeIdealAcceptable Short-TermDanger Zone
Cartridges (NES, SNES, N64, GB, GBA, DS, Switch)15–25°C (59–77°F)5–35°C (41–95°F)>40°C / <0°C (condensation risk)
Optical Discs (CD, DVD, BD, GD-ROM, UMD)18–22°C (64–72°F)10–30°C (50–86°F)>35°C (warping), <10°C (delamination)
Consoles / HDDs / SSDs15–25°C10–30°C>35°C (electrolytic cap drying, solder fatigue)
Magnetic Media (Floppy, Tape, HDD platters)18–22°C, 40–50% RH10–30°CHigh humidity >60% RH (mold, oxide shed)

Critical Rules

  • Stability > Absolute Value: Daily swings of 15°C+ cause more damage than steady 28°C. Avoid attics, garages, cars.
  • Humidity Control: 40–50% RH ideal. Use silica gel packs in sealed bins; monitor with hygrometer.
  • Disc Orientation: Store vertically (like books) in jewel cases. Horizontal stacking warps discs over years.
  • Cartridge Contacts: Gold flashing resists corrosion; clean with 99% IPA + fiber-free swab if needed.
  • Batteries: Remove CR2032/AA from cartridges (Pokémon, Zelda) and consoles (Dreamcast, Saturn, Xbox) for long-term storage—leakage destroys boards.
  • Sunlight: UV fades labels, brittles plastic, warps discs. Store in opaque boxes.

Long-Term Archival (10+ Years)

Climate-controlled unit (18°C, 45% RH), anti-static bags for PCBs, acid-free sleeves for manuals, off-site backup of ROMs/ISOs (you own).
