Can Video Games Make You Cross-Eyed? No — But They Can Cause Eye Strain

Strabismus Is Not Caused by Gaming

Crossed eyes (strabismus) is a medical misalignment of the eye muscles. It is congenital, neurological, or trauma-induced — not caused by screen use.

What Gaming *Can* Cause (Temporary)

  • Digital Eye Strain (Computer Vision Syndrome): Dry eyes, blur, headache, neck pain — from reduced blink rate and fixed focus.
  • Accommodative Spasm: Focus "locks" at near distance; resolves with rest.
  • Convergence Insufficiency Exacerbation: Pre-existing difficulty coordinating eyes at near — gaming highlights it.

Prevention: The 20-20-20 Rule

  • Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Blink consciously; use artificial tears.
  • Monitor at arm's length, slightly below eye level.
  • Limit sessions; balance with outdoor time (myopia protection).

When to See a Doctor

  • Persistent double vision.
  • One eye turns in/out/up/down constantly.
  • Headaches unrelieved by rest.
  • Child squints, covers one eye, tilts head.

Gaming doesn't rewire eye muscles — but it can tire them. Rest fixes strain; strabismus needs an ophthalmologist.
