What Are Video Game Graphics? Complete Technical Overview

Video game graphics are the real-time visual representation of a virtual world—rendered frames composed of geometry, textures, shaders, lighting, and post-effects, delivered at interactive frame rates.

Core Asset Types

  • 2D Sprites: Textured quads with animated UV frames. Used for UI, particles, 2D games, billboard effects (trees, smoke).
  • 3D Models (Meshes): Vertex buffers (position, normal, UV, tangent) + index buffers. Static or skinned (skeletal animation).
  • Textures: Albedo (color), Normal (surface detail), Roughness/Metalness (PBR), AO, Emissive, Height/Displacement. Compressed (BC1-7, ASTC).
  • Animations: Keyframed skeletal, vertex morph, procedural (compute shader), motion capture.
  • Effects (VFX): Particle systems (CPU/GPU), ribbons, trails, decals, volumetric light, fluid sim.

Rendering Pipeline (Modern)

  1. Culling: Frustum, occlusion, back-face.
  2. Geometry pass: G-buffer (deferred) or forward pass.
  3. Lighting: Deferred/Forward+/Clustered — PBR BRDF (GGX), IBL (probes, cubemaps), shadow maps (CSM, VSM).
  4. Post-process: Bloom, DOF, motion blur, TAA/FSR/DLSS, color grading, film grain.
  5. UI/HUD: Canvas overlay (often separate render pass).

Key Technical Metrics

  • Resolution: Pixel count (720p → 4K → 8K). Higher = detail, GPU cost.
  • Frame Rate: FPS (30, 60, 120, 144+). Higher = responsiveness, motion clarity.
  • Render Engine: Unreal, Unity, Godot, proprietary (Decima, Frostbite, RE Engine, id Tech). Determines feature ceiling.

Era Examples

  • 2D: Super Mario Bros. (NES), Celeste (modern pixel).
  • Early 3D: Super Mario 64 (N64), Quake (software/GL).
  • PBR Era: The Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077 (RTX).
  • Stylized: Okami (sumi-e), Jet Set Radio (cel-shade), Hi-Fi Rush (toon).

Graphics tech evolves toward photorealism *and* stylized abstraction—both serve immersion.
