How to Get a Job as a Video Game Designer: Comprehensive Guide

1. Build Foundational Skills

  • Game Engines: Master one — Unity (C#) or Unreal (C++/Blueprints). Build 3+ complete micro-projects (1-week each).
  • Systems Design: Deconstruct 5 favorite games: economy, progression, combat, difficulty curves. Write 1-page analyses.
  • Scripting/Logic: Comfortable with variables, loops, state machines, events. Catlike Coding (Unity), Unreal Online Learning.
  • Tools: Jira, Perforce/Git, Miro/Figma (flowcharts), Excel/Sheets (balance sheets).

2. Create a Targeted Portfolio

  • 3–5 Playable Prototypes: WebGL (Unity) or packaged .exe (Unreal). 5-min experiences showing one core mechanic each.
  • Design Docs: One-pager + systems spec + level layout per project.
  • Post-Mortems: What failed, what you'd change. Shows reflection.
  • Host on: itch.io (free), personal site, GitHub (code only).

3. Specialize (Pick a Lane)

  • Systems Designer: Economies, progression, combat math.
  • Level Designer: Layout, pacing, environmental storytelling (Whitebox → Greybox → Polish).
  • Narrative Designer: Branching dialogue, quest design, lore bibles.
  • Technical Designer: Blueprint/C# prototypes, tools, shaders.
  • UX/UI Designer: Wireframes, usability testing, HUD design.

4. Gain Experience

  • Game Jams: Global Game Jam, Ludum Dare, GMTK Jam — 48h projects = portfolio pieces + network.
  • Modding: Skyrim, Factorio, RimWorld, Halo (Forge) — shipped content with players.
  • QA/Tester Roles: Entry point at studios. Learn pipeline, bug reporting, dev culture.
  • Internships: Apply to GameJobs, GameDeveloper Jobs, studio career pages.

5. Network Strategically

  • Discord: Join studio-specific, discipline-specific servers (e.g., "Level Design Discord").
  • Conferences: GDC (volunteer for free pass), PAX Dev, local meetups.
  • LinkedIn: Follow hiring managers. Comment thoughtfully on their posts.
  • Cold Outreach: "I prototyped X mechanic inspired by your game Y — here's a 2-min video. Any feedback?"

6. Apply Smart

  • Tailor portfolio to studio's genre (don't send FPS prototypes to match-3 studio).
  • Design test? Treat as paid consult: clarify scope, timebox, present rationale.
  • Expect 50–100 apps per offer. Track in Notion/Airtable.

Reality Check

Median entry-level design salary (US): $55k–$75k. Competition: 200+ apps per junior role. Persistence > talent. Keep shipping.
