How Long Does Game Development Take? It Varies Wildly

There's no single answer. Think "building a house" – a shed vs. a skyscraper.

Key Factors

  • Scope/Genre: Mobile hyper-casual (3–6 mo) < Indie (6mo–3yr) < AA (2–4yr) < AAA (3–7+ yr).
  • Team Size/Exp: Solo dev (years) vs. 500-person studio (parallel pipelines).
  • Tech: Custom engine (years R&D) vs. Unity/Unreal/Godot (faster start).
  • Content Depth: Linear 5hr vs. Open World 100hr + Live Ops.
  • Polish/QA: "It works" vs. "Certification ready" (console TRC/TCR).

Typical Phases (AAA Example)

  1. Pre-production (Concept, Prototyping, Vertical Slice): 6–18 months.
  2. Production (Full Asset/Code/Design): 18–48 months. Milestones: First Playable → Alpha (Content Complete) → Beta (Feature Complete) → RC.
  3. QA / Localization / Cert / Manufacturing: 3–6 months.
  4. Live Ops / DLC / Patches: Years post-launch.

Famous Examples

  • Duke Nukem Forever: 14 years (dev hell).
  • Cyberpunk 2077: ~9 years (announced 2012).
  • Stardew Valley: 4.5 years (solo).
  • Among Us: ~1 year (small team), then 2 years obscurity.
  • Tetris (Game Boy): ~6 weeks (port).

Quality ≠ Time. Scope management & iteration speed matter more.
