How to Register for Collector Plates in Illinois

Have documentation that establishes the age of the vehicle. In Illinois, antique, or collector's, vehicles must be at least 25 years old to qualify.

Verify that the physical and mechanical condition of the vehicle is the same as when the car was originally purchased. This includes the condition of the lights, glass and brakes, as well as the appearance of the car. The car must also be as safe as when it was originally manufactured.

Obtain documentation if the car is an exact replica of an antique, meaning that it is a precise reproduction of the original vehicle, including the frame and mechanical operation. An exact replica is eligible for collector's status. Vehicles that are close but not identical to the original vehicle will not qualify for antique plates.

Print and fill out an Affirmation of Use and Condition of Antique Motor Vehicle form to take with you when registering the vehicle.

Bring all documentation regarding the car, including the title, registration and current insurance information, with you to your local Department of Motor Vehicles. Bring personal photo identification and another form of legal documentation, such as a notarized birth certificate or Social Security card.

Bring money for the antique license plate fee, which in Illinois was $30 as of June 2010. The license plate will be valid for five years from the date of registration
