Instructions for the Summit Toys Talking Cash Register

The Summit Toys Zillionz Talking Cash Register allows children to pretend to take sales in a retail checkout situation. Parents can use the machine to teach children about the value of money, credit and basic math. Initially, an adult must prepare the machine for use and make certain that it works properly. Once the machine is set up, a child can check out items, accept cash--play or real money--or pretend credit payments, and even talk over a loudspeaker.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Rotate the screw counterclockwise on the Talking Cash Register battery compartment cover with a screwdriver. Remove the cover.

    • 2

Install the four AA-size batteries--matching the terminal polarity marks on the batteries to the marks in the compartment.

    • 3

Return the cover to the machine and screw it in place.

    • 4

Move the "Demo/Play" switch on the machine bottom to the "Play" position.

    • 5

Push the "On/Off" key to turn the register on and confirm that it's working. If it's working correctly, it should say "Hi, welcome back!" If necessary, change the speaker volume setting by moving the "High/Low" switch on the register bottom.

    • 6

Attach the included bar code stickers to objects that will act as pretend retail items.

    Play

    • 7

Push the "Open" key to open the cash register drawer--the machine should "Ca-ching" when it opens. Insert some of the included 20-, 10-, 5- and 1-dollar play bills into the long cavities and the quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies in the short cavities. Shut the drawer.

    • 8

Grasp the hand-held scanner, place it over a barcode--aligning the arrows on the scanner with arrows on the barcode--and press the trigger to scan items. The register should show the item amount on the display as well as say it aloud. Repeat with additional items.

    • 9

Press the "Total" button to hear the total for the items scanned or see it on the register display.

    • 10

Take the "customer" payment by cash or credit card. If the customer pays with cash, determine whether change is needed by subtracting the total due from the amount received and give back any change. If the customer pays with the included credit card, run the card through the credit card scanner slot; the machine should say "Credit Approved."

    • 11

Clear out the sale by pushing the "C/CE" key and start over. When finished playing, push the "On/Off" key to turn off the machine. The register should say, "Thank you. Come again. Goodbye!"
