Saving in Project64 (N64 Emulator): In-Game Saves vs Save States

Project64 doesn't auto-save like modern emulators. Two systems:

1. In-Game Saves (Cartridge SRAM/EEPROM/FlashRAM)

  • Most N64 games save to virtual cartridge memory.
  • Use in-game menu: Save, Write, Controller Pak.
  • Files: .sra (SRAM), .eep (EEPROM), .fla (FlashRAM) in Save folder.
  • Back up this folder.

2. Save States (Emulator Snapshots)

  • Instant full-state capture (RAM, CPU, GPU, audio).
  • Default: F5 (save slot 0), F7 (load slot 0). F6/F8 cycle slots.
  • Files: .pj in SaveStates folder.
  • Not portable across emulator versions.

Best Practice

  1. Use in-game saves for progress.
  2. Use save states for checkpoints (boss attempts, RNG manipulation).
  3. Export battery saves: File → Export Battery File (for real hardware/other emus).
  4. Configure: Options → Settings → Save → "Auto-save battery" on close.

Controller Pak (Mem Pak)

  • Separate .mpk files per game.
  • Enable in Options → Controller → "Controller Pak" → "Plugged."
  • Game must support it (many do).

Never rely solely on save states — corruptible, version-locked.
