Running Windows 98 Games on Windows XP: Compatibility Guide

Most Win98 games run on XP thanks to built-in compatibility shims, but exceptions exist.

Crashes / graphics glitchesDirectX version mismatchInstall DX9.0c (June 2010 redist); try dgVoodoo2

Best Practice

  1. Try native first – right-click exe → Properties → Compatibility → “Windows 98 / Me”.
  2. Install DX9.0c and latest GPU drivers.
  3. If fails: VirtualBox/VMware with Windows 98 SE + Guest Additions.
  4. Or: DOSBox (for DOS games), PCem (hardware-accurate Win9x).

GOG.com versions come pre-fixed – best $5–10 spent.
