Minecraft Compatibility: Supported Operating Systems (Java vs Bedrock Editions)

Minecraft runs on a vast range of platforms, split between the Java Edition (PC only) and the Bedrock Edition (consoles, mobile, Windows 10/11).

Desktop

  • Windows: 10 (version 1903+), 11. Older versions (7/8) may run Java Edition but lack Bedrock support and security updates.
  • macOS: 10.12 Sierra or newer (Java & Bedrock via Microsoft Store/Minecraft Launcher).
  • Linux: Most 64‑bit distros (Ubuntu 20.04+, Fedora, Debian, Arch, SteamOS). Java Edition runs natively; Bedrock requires third‑party launchers or Windows compatibility layers.

Mobile

  • Android: 5.0 Lollipop or later (Bedrock via Google Play / Amazon Appstore).
  • iOS / iPadOS: 12.0 or later (Bedrock via App Store).

Consoles (Bedrock Edition Only)

  • PlayStation 4 / 5
  • Xbox One / Series X|S
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Fire TV / Chromecast (Google Play Games)

VR & Niche

  • VR: Meta Quest (via Bedrock), PS VR (PS4 version), Windows Mixed Reality (Java with mods).
  • Raspberry Pi: Pi 3/4/5 can run Java Edition (via optimized builds like Paper/Spigot) or Bedrock (via dedicated server software).

Key Distinction: Java Edition allows extensive modding and custom servers; Bedrock enables cross‑play across all listed consoles and mobile. Worlds are not directly transferable between editions.
