Can a TV Show TV and a Game Simultaneously? (PiP / Multi-View)

Standard TVs: No. A single display panel shows one input source at a time.

Exceptions & Workarounds

1. Picture-in-Picture (PiP) / Picture-by-Picture (PbP)

  • PiP: Small inset window (Source B) over main full-screen (Source A). Audio from main only.
  • PbP: Split screen 50/50 or custom ratio. Two inputs side-by-side.
  • Availability: **Rare on modern consumer TVs.** Common on 2010–2015 high-end (Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic). Removed to save scaler cost.
  • Current Models With PiP/PbP: Select **Samsung Neo QLED / QLED (2021+)** — "Multi View". **LG OLED (2021+)** — "Multi View" (2 inputs, mobile mirroring). **High-end Monitors** (Dell UltraSharp, LG UltraGear, Samsung Odyssey) — PbP/PIP standard.

2. Dual Tuner (TV + TV)

  • Some TVs have **dual ATSC tuners** → Watch one OTA channel, record another. Not "Game + TV".

3. External Solutions (Best Flexibility)

  • HDMI Matrix Switch / Picture-in-Picture Processor: Decimator MD-HX, Blackmagic Teranex, ATEM Mini — Pro gear ($300–$1000). True PiP/PbP any 2 HDMI.
  • Capture Card + OBS (PC): Game on Monitor 1, TV window on Monitor 2 (or PiP in OBS preview). Stream/Record simultaneously.
  • Two Displays: TV for console, Monitor for PC/Stream. Cheapest & best.
  • Portable Monitor (USB-C): $100–$150. Second screen for guide/wiki/chat while gaming on TV.

4. Console Features

  • Xbox Series X|S / One: **Snap** removed (2017). No PiP. Guide overlay only.
  • PS5 / PS4: No PiP. Picture-in-Picture only for **PS5 Media Remote** controlling TV (HDMI-CEC), not console rendering.
  • Steam Deck / PC: Borderless window + Always on Top (PowerToys) → PiP anywhere.

Recommendation

Buy a **second monitor** (24" 1080p 144Hz = $100) or **portable monitor**. Connect console to TV, PC/laptop to monitor. True simultaneous use. No compromise.
