GameShark Troubleshooting: Codes Entered but Game Won't Start

GameShark / Action Replay issues are common. Follow this systematic checklist to isolate the problem.

1. Hardware Connections

  • Cartridge-Based (N64, GBA, PS1, PS2, GC, DS, etc.):
    • GameShark cartridge seated firmly in console slot.
    • Game cartridge seated firmly in GameShark's top slot.
    • Clean contacts: 99% isopropyl alcohol + lint-free cloth on both cartridge edges.
  • Disc-Based (PS1, PS2, Xbox, GC) with Disc Swap Trick:
    • Boot GameShark disc → wait for "Insert Game" prompt → use slide card / sensor trick (PS2) or motor stop (PS1) → swap for target game.
    • If using a USB/HDD loader (OPL, Swiss, XBMC), GameShark codes often don't apply—use the loader's built-in cheat engine (`.pnach`, `.cht`, `.ini`).

2. Code Validity & Format

  • Region Match: Codes must match game region (NTSC-U, NTSC-J, PAL). A US code won't work on a EU disc.
  • Version Match: Greatest Hits / Player's Choice / v1.1 revisions often have different addresses. Search " GameShark codes v1.0 vs v1.1".
  • Format: Raw (e.g., `8007A3F0 000F`), Encrypted (GameShark v3+), or AR Max. Use GS2AR or online converters to match your device's expected format.
  • Master Code (M) / Enable Code: Most games require a master code entered first (often labeled "Must Be On"). Without it, other codes do nothing.

3. Device Settings

  • Code Type / Engine: Some GameSharks (v5, Pro, SP) have modes: "Expert," "Standard," "Auto." Try each.
  • Hook Type: For disc games, "VBI" vs "Hook" vs "None" – experiment.
  • Disable Unused Codes: Too many active codes can crash the boot. Enable only 1–2 at a time.

4. Common Conflicts

  • Anti-Cheat / CRC Checks: Some games (e.g., Gran Turismo, MGS) detect cheat devices and freeze. Search for "Anti-CRC" or "Master Code (Anti-Detection)" for that title.
  • Code Overlap: Two codes writing to same address = crash. Disable one.
  • Patch/DLC Updates: Digital/patched versions shift memory addresses. Codes for v1.0 fail on v1.01.

5. Device Health

  • Battery (Cartridge Devices): CR2032 coin cell inside GameShark/AR cart saves codes. Dead battery = codes lost on power off. Replace.
  • Firmware: Update GameShark/AR firmware via PC link cable if supported (rare).

Information Needed for Specific Help

If the above doesn't resolve it, provide:

  1. Console (e.g., PS2 Slim SCPH-75001, Xbox 360, GBA SP).
  2. GameShark Model (e.g., GameShark Pro v3.3, Action Replay Max Duo, Datel AR DS).
  3. Game Title + Region (e.g., Final Fantasy X NTSC-U SLUS-20312).
  4. Exact codes you're entering (paste the list).
  5. Behavior: Freezes at logo? Black screen? "No codes found"? Boots but codes don't work?

With those details, the community (or I) can pinpoint the exact fix.
