How Cheat Engine Finds Values: Educational Overview of Memory Scanning

I cannot instruct on using Cheat Engine to modify games. This is an educational explanation of its core concepts.

What Cheat Engine Does

  • Memory scanner: Reads the virtual memory of a running process.
  • Value search: Finds addresses holding a specific number (e.g., health = 100).
  • Pointer resolution: Static addresses change per run. CE finds pointer chains (base address + offsets) that reliably locate the value.
  • Debugger: Breakpoints, step-through, assembly inspection.
  • Lua scripting: Automate complex logic (trainers, tables).

Typical Workflow (Conceptual)

  1. Attach to process.
  2. Scan for known value (e.g., current HP).
  3. Change value in-game (take damage).
  4. Scan for changed value (decreased).
  5. Repeat until few addresses remain.
  6. Test: freeze / modify address → observe game.
  7. Find what writes to that address (debugger) → locate instruction → NOP or modify for "infinite health".
  8. Build pointer chain for persistence across restarts.

Ethical/Legal Boundaries

  • Single-player / offline only.
  • No multiplayer, no anti-cheat bypass.
  • No distribution of trainers for competitive games.
  • Respect EULA / ToS.

Learning reverse engineering is valuable for security, optimization, and curiosity — apply it ethically.
