GameShark 'Codes Corrupted' Error: Causes & Troubleshooting Steps

The "Codes Corrupted" error on a GameShark (Action Replay, CodeBreaker similar) indicates data integrity failure in the cheat database or hardware.

Common Causes

  1. Hardware Failure:
    • Dead/leaking internal battery (CR2025) — loses saved codes on power off.
    • Corroded / bent cartridge edge connector (clean with IPA + eraser).
    • Flash memory wear (limited write cycles) — older units.
    • Physical trauma (drops, liquid).
  2. Code Entry / Data Issues:
    • Typos entering manually (hex: 0-9, A-F only).
    • Wrong code format for your GS version (v1/v2/v3/Pro/SP).
    • Codes for wrong game region (USA vs EUR vs JAP) or revision (v1.0 vs v1.1).
    • Corrupted download from PC link cable / serial transfer (checksum mismatch).
  3. Game Cartridge Issues:
    • Dirty contacts (clean with IPA).
    • Game revision mismatch (codes for v1.0, you have v1.1).
  4. System Incompatibility:
    • Using GBC GameShark on GBA/SP (works for GBC games only).
    • Using DS Action Replay for GBA games (requires Slot-2 support).

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Replace internal battery (CR2025).
  2. Clean cartridge pins (IPA + pink eraser).
  3. Delete all codes → Re-enter one known working master code (if required) + one simple code (e.g., infinite lives).
  4. Try a different game cartridge.
  5. Update firmware (if GS Pro/SP with PC link cable + software).
  6. Test on another console (GBC/GBA/SP) to isolate device vs console.

If persistent → Unit likely failed. Flashcarts (EZ-Flash, EverDrive) are modern, reliable replacements.
