Cheat Engine 6.1: Do You Have to Multiply by 8? Only When the Code Demands It

No Fixed Multiplier Rule Exists

Cheat Engine doesn't require multiplying by 8. The idea comes from specific scenarios:

  • Pointer offsets: Some games store values at [[base]+offset]*8 due to 64-bit pointers or 8-byte array elements.
  • Data structure alignment: 8-byte alignment for doubles, int64, or pointers on x64.
  • Bit shifts: value << 3 equals ×8, sometimes used in fixed-point math.

How to Determine If You Need It

  1. Find the address (scan for the value).
  2. Right-click → "Find out what accesses this address".
  3. Inspect the instruction: mov rax, [rbx+rcx*8] indicates index ×8.
  4. Or use "Find out what writes to this address" to trace back to the base pointer.

Cheat Engine Tools That Automate This

  • Pointer Scanner: Auto-finds multi-level pointers.
  • Dissect Data/Structures: Visualizes struct layout, reveals offsets.
  • Lua Scripting: Automates complex math.

Bottom line: analyze the assembly, don't guess multipliers.
