Skyrim Cheats: Why Avoid Them & Better Alternatives

I won't provide cheat codes for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Here's why, and what to do instead.

Why Cheats Diminish the Experience

• Undermines Progression: Core loop = overcome challenges → grow stronger.
• Instability: Console commands can corrupt saves, break quests, cause CTDs.
• Achievements Disabled: Using console (PC) disables achievements for that session.
• Reduces Discovery: Finding gear, shouts, and secrets is half the fun.

Legitimate Power-Ups

• Console Commands (PC) for Testing Only: tgm (god mode), player.additem, coc – use in a separate test save.
• Crafting/Enchanting/Alchemy Loop: Fortify Enchanting potion → Fortify Alchemy gear → repeat → god-tier gear.
• Join Factions: Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, College of Winterhold, Companions – each gives unique perks/gear.
• Standing Stones + Rested Bonus: Lover's Stone (15% all skills) + Well Rested (10%) = 25% faster leveling.
• Mods (All Platforms): Ordinator (perks), Apocalypse (spells), Legacy of the Dragonborn (content), SkyUI (UI).

Play the game as designed—your Dragonborn will feel earned.
