Playing Game Boy Games on Nintendo DS: Flashcarts, Emulators & Legal Notes

Native support: No. DS/DS Lite have a GBA slot (Slot-2) but lack the Z80 co-processor and 5V voltage regulator required for GB/GBC cartridges.

Workarounds

1. Flashcart (Best Hardware Experience)

• Slot-1 Flashcart (R4i Gold 3DS Plus, Ace3DS X, DSTWO) + Goomba Color / Lameboy emulator homebrew.
• Slot-2 Flashcart (EZ-Flash IV, Supercard SD, M3 Perfect) — runs GB/GBC via Goomba on GBA hardware (requires DS Lite/Phat).

2. Emulation on DS (Slow/Incomplete)

• Lameboy / GameYob homebrew apps. Run from Slot-1 flashcart. Performance okay for GB; GBC struggles (no frameskip).

3. GBA SP + Game Boy Player (GameCube) — Not DS

Game Boy Player reads GB/GBC/GBA carts on GameCube via GBA link. Irrelevant to DS.
